History
Originally settled in 1805 by Benjamin and Susanna Ellis, Fertile Acres was bought for $1.25 per acre for the starting plot of 53 acres of land. That's right, 53 acres of land for only $66.25! The original log cabin, which housed Mr. & Mrs. Ellis and their 9 children, was located at the foot of the old barn. The "new" barn, which is still there, was built in 1867 by nearly 100 neighboring men and women over a two day span. Each nail used on the barn is hand-made. As Mr. & Mrs. Ellis fell into poor health, the farm was given to Harry Fitch, who was a nephew of Benjamin Ellis. Mr. Ellis deeded the farm over to Harry, and the Fitch family has owned and operated the farm ever since, expanding along the way.
